OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles a fifth of Google's search volume

OpenAI's consumer product lead said the volume of search queries through ChatGPT now equals about 20 percent of Google's, at a press event on Monday. The company defines a search as a query that results in a web search rather than a definition or a simple how-to, and did not disclose where the Google figure came from.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • OpenAI's consumer product lead said the volume of search queries through ChatGPT now equals about 20 percent of Google's, at a press event on Monday.
  • The company defines a search as a query that results in a web search rather than a definition or a simple how-to, and did not disclose where the Google figure came from.
  • OpenAI has also reported 1.2 billion weekly active users, up 200 million in two months, which puts the search claim in the context of a rapidly growing assistant.

The claim

OpenAI has put a number on its search ambitions. The Verge reported that the volume of search queries run through ChatGPT now equals 20 percent of the volume run through Google, according to an announcement from the company's consumer product lead, Adam Fry, at a press event on Monday.

The framing matters because search is the most valuable advertising surface on the internet. If one in five search queries starts in ChatGPT, then the assistant is no longer a novelty destination; it is a distribution channel that Google has to account for.

What counts as a search

The definition is doing some work. The Verge reported that Fry defines a search as any time a user inputs a query that results in a web search, as opposed to tasks like defining a term or a simple how-to explanation.

That is a narrower category than total queries, and it is the right one for the claim being made: it counts the moments when ChatGPT decides to retrieve from the web. It does not include the much larger volume of questions answered from the model's own knowledge.

The missing source

One detail is conspicuous. The Verge reported that Fry did not specify the source of the Google search volume number, which means the comparison rests on an undisclosed estimate of a competitor's traffic.

That does not make the figure wrong, but it means the claim should be read as a ratio of two differently measured quantities. Companies rarely publish comparable search volumes, and third-party estimates vary by methodology and by whether they count searches, sessions or queries.

The user numbers behind it

The search claim sits alongside a growth figure. Techmeme summarised reporting from Big Technology that ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry said ChatGPT has hit 1.2 billion weekly active users, adding 200 million over the past two months.

A fifth of Google's search volume with roughly a tenth of Google's user base would imply unusually heavy usage per user, which is plausible for a product that people use for work as well as for questions. It also implies that the ratio could rise quickly if the user base keeps growing at this pace.

The Bing comparison

The Verge supplied the historical benchmark that makes the number legible: Microsoft's Satya Nadella said during Google's 2023 antitrust trial that Bing had about 3 percent of the search engine market share after more than a decade of trying.

Twenty percent is a different league from 3 percent. It suggests that AI assistants can do what a competing search engine could not, which is change where people start rather than offering a marginally better version of the same product.

Why it matters for Google

Google's business depends on queries happening on surfaces where it sells ads. When those queries move into an assistant, the ad inventory moves with them, and the company's own AI products become a defensive necessity rather than an optional strategy.

This site covered the same pressure from the advertising side, where Google search ad visits out-earned ChatGPT ads in the US, and from the product side, where OpenAI merged ChatGPT's chat and work tabs to keep users inside one surface longer.

The business question

Volume is not revenue. Google monetises search with mature ad systems and enormous sales operations, while ChatGPT's ad products are still being built and its subscription revenue depends on usage limits that cost money to serve.

This site covered the cost pressure on consumer AI subscriptions, and the same logic applies here: a search query answered by a model is more expensive than one answered by an index, so growth in volume increases costs as well as influence. A query that costs cents to answer cannot be monetised at index-search rates unless the volume is enormous.

What could undercut the number

The obvious caveat is definitional drift. If OpenAI changes what it counts, the ratio can move without any change in user behaviour, and the company has an incentive to count generously when the comparison is favourable.

The second is that search volume is not the same as search dependence. A user who asks ChatGPT to look something up once a day still uses Google for navigation, shopping and local queries, and those categories carry the advertising value that OpenAI is trying to capture.

What is established, and what is not

Established: Adam Fry said search queries through ChatGPT equal about 20 percent of Google's volume, at a press event on Monday; OpenAI defines a search as a query resulting in a web search; Fry did not specify the source of the Google figure; the company also reported 1.2 billion weekly active users, up 200 million in two months; Bing had about 3 percent share after a decade. Not established: how OpenAI measures Google's volume, and what share of ChatGPT searches carry advertising.

The next disclosure to watch is revenue per search, not search share. If ChatGPT can monetise even a fraction of Google's rate on a fifth of the volume, the comparison becomes a business threat; if it cannot, the ratio is a usage statistic dressed as a market share claim.
