Apple Intelligence finally reaches China, two years after the US

Apple Intelligence is available in China for the first time with the iOS 27.3 beta, more than two years after it launched in the US. The release covers features from iOS 26 and iOS 18, including writing tools, photo clean-up, notification summaries and Siri improvements, but not Siri AI or the new AI features introduced in iOS 27.

The iOS 27.3 beta brings Apple's AI features to Chinese users with an Alibaba-powered content filter, but Siri AI and the newest iOS 27 capabilities are absent.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Apple Intelligence is available in China for the first time with the iOS 27.3 beta, more than two years after it launched in the US.
  • The release covers features from iOS 26 and iOS 18, including writing tools, photo clean-up, notification summaries and Siri improvements, but not Siri AI or the new AI features introduced in iOS 27.
  • Bloomberg reported that the China release pairs the features with an Alibaba-powered content filter, which is the regulatory condition that made the launch possible.

What arrived

Apple's AI features are now available to users in China, at least in beta. 9to5Mac reported that for the first time Apple Intelligence is available in China for beta users, arriving with iOS 27.3 beta 1 after more than two years of waiting since the US launch in October 2024.

The gap is the story as much as the arrival. Apple shipped its first Apple Intelligence features in 2024, and Chinese users watched the same features roll out across other markets while local rivals released their own assistants, which meant Apple spent two years selling iPhones in China without its main software differentiator.

The feature list

The first release is broad but not complete. 9to5Mac listed real-time translation across Messages, FaceTime, Phone and compatible AirPods, writing tools, visual intelligence, Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, natural language search in Photos, memory creation from prompts, priority mail, email summaries, Smart Reply, notification summaries and a new Reduce Distractions focus mode.

The list continues with audio transcription summaries in Notes, summaries of call transcripts, and Siri improvements including Type to Siri, more natural language support and the ability to retain context during a conversation. In other words, the arrivals are the features Apple has been shipping elsewhere for two years.

What is not there

The omissions are as important as the inclusions. 9to5Mac reported that Siri AI is notably missing, and that essentially none of the new AI capabilities introduced in iOS 27 are included.

That means the Chinese launch is a catch-up release rather than a current-generation one. Apple is focusing first on bringing the AI features from iOS 26 and iOS 18 to users in China, which suggests the newer assistant work depends on infrastructure or approvals that are not ready yet.

The Alibaba filter

The regulatory condition behind the launch was reported separately. Techmeme summarised Bloomberg's reporting that Apple is adding Apple Intelligence in China with an Alibaba-powered content filter, alongside the watchOS 27.3 beta that carries Siri Recap and Live Rewind.

A local partner and a content filter are the standard price of entry for generative features in China. Alibaba provides the model layer and the compliance mechanism, which means Apple can ship the experience without operating the filtering itself, and Alibaba gains a role in a product it does not control.

The watch features too

The same beta cycle brings audio intelligence to the Watch. This site covered the Siri Recap and Live Rewind beta when it appeared in the watchOS 27 beta, including the seven-day deletion default and the sensitive-data exclusions Apple designed in.

Shipping those features in China alongside Apple Intelligence is a test of whether the same privacy architecture survives a filtered environment. Apple's claim has been that processing stays on device or in Private Cloud Compute; a local filter is a third path that the company has not described in detail.

Why China mattered so much

China is Apple's largest market outside the United States and the one where local competition has been strongest. Huawei, Xiaomi and others ship assistants built on domestic models and have been able to market them while Apple could not.

That put Apple in an unusual position: a premium brand with a delayed software story in its most contested market. The launch closes that gap partially, and the speed with which the missing features follow will decide whether it closes fully.

The wider AI competition

Apple's approach has been to arrive late with a polished product rather than early with a rough one, a strategy this site covered when John Ternus argued against shipping AI for its own sake. China is the hardest test of that strategy, because the delay there was measured in years rather than months.

The competitive picture also includes the assistant platforms OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are building, and this site has tracked how those tools reach enterprise users in Google Cloud agent work. Apple's advantage is distribution and privacy architecture; its disadvantage is that the model layer is someone else's, in China doubly so.

What could go wrong

The first risk is a two-tier experience. If Chinese users receive features two generations behind, reviewers and customers will notice, and the marketing claim that iPhone is the best place for AI becomes harder to sustain in that market.

The second risk is trust around the filter. Users in China expect filtering, but they also expect consistency, and Apple has not published how the Alibaba layer interacts with its own processing guarantees. Ambiguity there is a problem for a company whose privacy positioning is its main differentiator.

What is established, and what is not

Established: Apple Intelligence is available in China for beta users with iOS 27.3 beta 1, more than two years after the US launch; the release includes features from iOS 26 and iOS 18 such as writing tools, photo clean-up, notification summaries and Siri improvements; Siri AI and the new iOS 27 AI capabilities are not included; Bloomberg reported the release uses an Alibaba-powered content filter; watchOS 27.3 beta carries Siri Recap and Live Rewind. Not established: the timeline for Siri AI in China, and how the filter interacts with Apple's privacy architecture.

The next milestone is Siri AI in Chinese, because that is the feature users will judge the whole system by. Until it ships, Apple Intelligence in China is a back catalogue rather than a current product, and the company's late-but-polished strategy remains unproven in the market where it has the most to prove.
